The Model Systems Approach

Research of the RSCICDV

Clinical Research Studies

No one can know everything about everything. That is why some researchers have created something called the "model systems" approach. This is when investigators agree to collaborate in the study of something in depth and build on their shared body of knowledge.

Sponsored by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR), the Model Spinal Cord Injury System (MSCIS) program, uses a similar approach. It has helped to establish innovative projects for the delivery, demonstration, and evaluation of comprehensive medical, vocational, and other rehabilitation services to meet the needs of individuals with SCI.

The MSCIS has created a network of centers across the United States that:

  • Demonstrate improved care
  • Maintain a national database
  • Participate in independent and collaborative research
  • Provide continuing education relating to spinal cord injury.

At present, there are 14 Model SCI Systems funded for the 2006-2011 Project Period. The RSCICDV is one of the designated Model Systems programs.
