Every clinical trial has specific guidelines regarding participation. These guidelines include "inclusion criteria." This is a list of the individuals who would make ideal subjects for the trial. "Exclusion criteria" lists individuals who, because of health risks or other factors, are unable to participate in the trial. These criteria might include things such as age, gender, the type and stage of a disease, previous treatment history, and other medical conditions.
If you wish to join a clinical trial and are not included, do not take it personally. Inclusion and exclusion criteria are a very important part of a research study. They help identify the most appropriate participants in order for investigators to answer the research questions they wish to answer, but most importantly, inclusion and exclusion criteria are created to keep people safe.
