7. Title: Restoration of Walking After Spinal Cord Injury – a Consumer Preference for Walking – Experiment 4.
Purpose: To demonstrate consumer preference for restoration of walking function based on the severity of injury, time from injury (acutely injured versus those living with SCI over time) and age of the individual. Also, to compare consumer preferences with clinician preferences.

Background: Consumer preference needs careful study to determine the importance of mobility to persons with SCI. Stineman has reported a discrepancy between consumer and clinicians rating of dimensions of disability. The study not only showed differences, but facilitated a discussion between consumers and clinicians that allowed the clinicians to more openly consider the consumers value judgements.
The difference among consumers’ value judgements was illustrated by reaction to a television commercial which showed quadriplegic Christopher Reeves getting up from a wheelchair and walking across a stage. The commercial implied such a goal was achievable in the future with proper investment of research funds. Many individuals commented that this offered hope and was a very inspiring message, whereas others were upset at a message of false hope and the implication that individuals in wheelchairs needed to walk.
This experiment is an adaptation of the Stineman study.The study aimsto demonstrate consumer preference for restoration of walking function based on the severity of injury, time from injury (acutely injured versus those living with SCI over time) and age of the individual. It will also compare consumer preferences with clinician preferences.
