Research: Publications

Ashwini D. Sharan, M.D., Assistant Professor of Neurology and Neurosurgery in Thomas Jefferson University's Department of Neurosurgery, has extensive training in the fields of functional neurosurgery, spine surgery and pediatric neurosurgery.

Currently, Dr. Sharan, a 2002 recipient of the William H. Sweet Young Investigator Award, is a co-investigator for two National Instiutes of Health-funded research projects. One project focuses on human brain cell infection and neuronal dysfunction in AIDS. The second project is studying the genetic influences on human epilepsy. Additionally, he has a co-investigative role in an Institutional Review Board study evaluating the occlusion of cerebral arteriovenous malformations with the drug, Neurocryl™M. He is also part of another NIH-funded study that is looking at safety issues for patients with implanted deep-brain stimulation systems who undergo MR imaging.

Dr. Sharan is a member of the Association of American Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the Movement Disorder Society, the American Stereotactic Functional Neurosurgery, the American Medical Association and the Pennsylvania Neurological Surgeons.

In addition, Dr. Sharan has co-authored papers appearing in the Journal of Neurosurgery, Principles and Practice of Spine Surgery, Neuromodulation, the the Journal of MRI, and Neurosurgery. Dr. Sharan has been faculty member for several review courses throughout the United States. His topics have included mechanisms of and deep brain stimulation, advanced stereotactic and functional neurosurgery, vertebroplasty, and pain—its aspects and treatment.
