A specialist in trauma, Murray J. Cohen, MD, Director of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital's Trauma Division and its Surgical Intensive Care Unit, has served on several trauma-related state and city committees. In addition to his role with the Hospital Association of Pennsylvania Executive Committee for the Section on Accredited Trauma Centers, Dr. Cohen has held positions on the Pennsylvania Committee on Trauma, ACS; the Philadelphia Trauma Directors Committee, and the Pennsylvania District #5 Committee on ACS Applicants. He was also the Trauma Liaison for the Philadelphia Chapter of the American College of Surgeons.
Presently, Dr. Cohen is Chairman of Jefferson's SICU/ISICU Administrative Committee and was previously Chair of the Hospital's Special Care Unit Committee and Trauma Administrative Committee. He is also a member of the Hospital's Emergency Preparedness Committee and chairs the Multidisciplinary Trauma Working Group. Before joining Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Dr. Cohen was Director of the Trauma Program at Warminster General Hospital, Warminster, PA.
In 1994, Dr. Cohen was named Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery for Jefferson Medical College. For two years he was the course director for FAST at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and from 1996 through 2001, was on the faculty at the Hospital's Annual Day of Trauma.
Dr. Cohen's awards include two Philadelphia city commendations for the "On-Scene Medical Response Team;" a Best Case Presentation at the Annual Day of Trauma for two consecutive years; and a Teaching Excellence Award from Thomas Jefferson University Hospital's Chief Surgical Residents.
The professional societies to which Dr. Cohen belongs are the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the American Medical Association, the Pennsylvania Medical Society, and the American College of Surgeons where he is a fellow. He is currently the principal investigator for an ongoing study entitled Anemia of Critical Illness.
Several book chapters and refereed journals have been co-authored by Dr. Cohen who is also an active speaker. His presentations have addressed numerous aspects of trauma, including trauma to the vessels of the chest, abdominal trauma, vascular trauma, trauma systems and the multiple trauma patient; open abdomen damage control; acute management of the spinal cord injured patient; gastric cancer, and porta hepatitis injuries.
