Research: Publications

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital's Anthony S. Burns, MD is an Assistant Professor in the Hospital's Department of Rehabilitation Medicine and Assistant Director of its Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center of Delaware Valley. In 2000, Dr. Burns began serving on the Biomedical Committee for the Model Spinal Cord Injury Systems and, in 2002, joined the Task Force evaluating the outcomes and impacts for that model.

Dr. Burns is a member of the Clinical Research Development Advisory Group and a manuscript reviewer for the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is involved in a three-year National Institute of Health funded research project studying the lower motor neuron physiology after spinal cord injury.

Spinal cord pathology, upper extremity hypertonia, various physical dysfunctions of spinal cord injury patients, including women's reproductive issues, are areas of interest pursued by Dr. Burns. He has had abstracts presented at the International Medical Society of Paraplegia in Switzerland, the American Society of Neuroradiology Annual Meeting, Washington, DC, and the American Paraplegia Society in Las Vegas, NV.

A recipient of the Johns Hopkins Arthur A. Siebens Memorial Award for excellence in academics and devotion to patient care, and the Kappa Alpha Psi Achievement Recognition Award, Dr. Burns has been honored with several other awards for his academic achievements.

He is a member of the American College of Physicians, the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the Association of Academic Physiatrists, the National Spinal Cord Injury Association, and the American and International Medical Society of Paraplegia.

Dr. Burns has had papers and abstracted published in the American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Military Medicine, Spinal Cord, Spine, the Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine, and the Journal of Neurotrauma.
